Often times we are guilty of accumulating things we don’t need or throwing things around the place and promising ourselves we would put them away later, even if that’s what we said yesterday.
These items build up in different areas of our house or space; before you know it, there is clutter at every corner you turn.
Research shows that there is a connection between a cluttered space and elevated stress levels. So, in addition to the messy look of a cluttered space, it could be adding to your stress levels.
So, if you feel overwhelmed whenever you need to declutter and organize your space and you struggle to know where to start this post covers easy decluttering tips that you can use for any space in your house.
These tips are sure to help you level your mountain of clutter and keep it that way.
1. Start with one place at a time.

When you are cleaning a large space like your entire house it is important to start with one place at a time.
Cleaning a little bit of everywhere will not only make you feel overwhelmed, it could be demotivating, and it would seem like you aren’t making any progress.
Starting with one room at a time will help you focus and concentrate all your efforts on one space at a time.
This can also make it easier to stretch your cleaning across days if you need to.
Pick a place you want to tackle at a time, like the kitchen or bedroom, and focus on that space until you are done. Then pick the next space and continue like that until your entire home is clean.
2. Do the easy ones first.
Let’s be honest, cleaning is one of the most unmotivating tasks that exist but we have to do it anyway so it’s important we find our way around making it easier to get done.
Everyone has a different way of tackling a task and in a lot of instances it is preferable to start with the more difficult task but when it comes to cleaning, I personally prefer to start with the easier places or less messy places.
This is because less messy places take less time to declutter, and the more tasks you have accomplished the more motivated you will feel.
In my apartment, this would be the least messy place. So I can easily be done with it and tick that space off on my list. Also, the thought of what you need to do in the super messy places can fill you with dread making you procrastinate.
You can build momentum when you start with the easier space and usually, you just continue until you are done with your entire cleaning.
3. Split each space into sections.
Splitting each room into sections makes it more manageable, that way you can arrange similar items together easily.
you could divide a space such as a bedroom into the bed section, closet section, vanity section, and so on.
By doing so you can tackle one area at a time and feel less overwhelmed by the amount of clutter you have to clean.
4. Use baskets or plastic containers.

While you declutter, a good hack is to use baskets or plastic containers to put similar items together.
Each basket or container should be labeled by the items you are going to put in them. You can set aside a basket each for items you want to keep, sell, repurpose, or get rid of.
Using baskets or containers would also save you a great deal of time you would have spent going back and forth looking for places to fit items.
It also would make it a little less difficult to let go of items that are of no use to you anymore since all the items you are decluttering are going into different baskets anyway including the ones you intend to keep, you can just close your eyes and throw it in the discard or donate basket.
5. Use storage organizers.

It is one thing to clean out clutter but, if you don’t build a good organization system, you would have to constantly clean out the mess that builds up.
It starts with tossing that piece of laundry on the couch or bed and before you know it you are right back where you started with an abundance of clutter to clean.
Get storage organizers that make it difficult for you to just toss things so you are forced to place them back nicely.
A good vanity organizer that arranges your makeup brushes and other makeup items into different sections might be the solution to your cluttered vanity.
It also means that when you are finished with each item you know exactly where to keep them.
Storage organizers help maintain a clutter-free space.
6. Create more storage.
Sometimes you might not have enough room to fit in items that you do actually need.
In situations like this, I would advise you to create more storage. A space looks nice when things are nicely put away.
If you have a small space, you can still create storage by switching out your bed for one with drawers, raising your bed and placing plastic containers underneath, or using a dresser as a TV stand or bedside table.
