In a world where we are constantly overfed with entertainment, it can quickly become the only thing you consume during your free or chill time.
The convenience of our technological devices makes it so easy to get a boost of dopamine and activities like reading can become daunting.
Reading is an essential activity that keeps our brains young and sharp and helps us maintain our ability to learn more easily. It can impart us with the wisdom of people who have lived long before us, expand our creativity and also inspire us.
Reading regularly shouldn’t be something you only do when you are in school or enrolled in a learning program. Making a habit of reading every day even when you are out of school is guaranteed to set you apart and place you ahead in life.
So if you are wanting to read more and create a habit of reading regularly, here is how to create a habit of reading daily.
1. Set goals
To be successful at establishing a daily reading habit, you have to set a reading goal. Are you reading for leisure, are you trying to get some inspiration to improve yourself?
Whatever your goal for wanting to read more, you have to define it so you know which books to get.
2. Start small
It is easy to get ambitious when you are setting new goals and you can easily set unrealistic ones. Creating new habits is a marathon, not a sprint.
Focus more on the consistency of reading a little bit daily than wanting to finish a book in a week. Aim to read 20 – 30 minutes per day or just a chapter a day. Even if all you can read in one day is a page, focus on doing just that.
Focusing on the smaller task is more achievable and less daunting.
3. Create a reading nook
Create a designated space in your home for reading. It could be a corner of your room. You can decorate the space with some warm lights, cushions, and blankets.
This special reading place will make it easy to associate sitting there with reading so whenever you want to read, you can just go to your reading nook and immerse yourself in your reading.
4. Choose a topic that piques your interest presently
A good way to make it easy to read is to get books on topics that you are interested in at the moment.
Is there a topic that you are curious about?
A new book everyone is raving about?
An author you recently discovered?
It is easier to concentrate on reading if you are interested in what you are reading.
5. Diversify your reading or try something new
An excellent way to never get bored of reading is to spice up your reading by switching things up very often.
Try something different from what you have read before.
If you usually read fictional books, try non-fictional ones and vice versa.
Try a new author that is different from the usual ones that you read. You can find new favorites or areas of interest you never thought you would like.
6. Set a specific reading time
Set a specific time for reading. It could be part of your morning routine to help you kickstart your day or it could be something you do before bedtime to help you wind down instead of being on your devices.
The best way to make reading time work for you is to include it in a routine that you already have. This would make it easier to be consistent with it.
7. Join a book club
An easy way to enjoy reading and get into a habit of doing it is to join a book club.
There are all kinds of book clubs that you can find online. When you are reading together with a group of people, you will need to keep the reading pace with everyone. This will make consistency easier for you.
8. Immerse yourself in what you are reading
When you read, get rid of all distractions and fully immerse yourself in the material you are reading.
Immersing yourself in what you are reading allows you to create a world of your own imagination that helps you engage better with what you are reading and make the process super enjoyable.
