If shoes are your favorite accessories, chances are you have a reasonable of them. I mean, a nice pair of shoes does more than make an outfit pop. It can also improve your mood. So, it is ok to channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw.
But there is one problem that comes with having lots of shoes, storage.
Unless you have a walk-in closet, the storage available for your shoes would most likely be limited. A lot of times, after stacking our closets or wardrobe full of clothes, we are left with just the bottom for shoes.
And with just the bottom or floor space available for shoes throwing all of them into a pile is almost inevitable.
Now a general solution would be to cut down the number of your shoes, get rid of the ones you don’t often wear, buy fewer shoes, etc., but this doesn’t often solve the problem. If you love shoes and have built a collection for yourself, getting rid of them would be very difficult.
Fret no more dear shoe lover, because this post is specifically for you! In this post, I will be showing you other creative ways to provide storage and organization for your shoes.
I do, however, recommend decluttering your shoes from time to time. Get rid of the ones that don’t fit, are damaged, or don’t want anymore.
Now, for the shoes you do want to keep, below are some easy tips for organizing your shoes to help you create nice storage spaces for them.
Group them into categories.
First things first on this list of easy tips for organizing your shoes, before organizing your shoes, group them into different categories of your choice. This makes picking the storage location for them easier.
Shoes worn often should be kept in places that are easily accessible.
The occasionally worn ones can be kept at the top of your shelf or closet.
You can also group your pretty shoes in a category to display them and tuck away the not-so-good-looking ones.
Shoe organizers.
The next tip on the list of easy tips for organizing your shoes is to use shoe organizers.
You can use shoe organizers to make room for more shoes in your closet. You can find different designs, types, and sizes to fit the size of your closet.
You can find a variety of them on amazon or other stores.
With a little railing space for hooking your organizer, you would have room to accommodate several pairs of shoes.
Baskets.
Baskets are great organization items because of their versatility. You can use them to organize just about anything: shoes, clothes, toys, you name it.
You can place them on shelves or on the floor.
They also help reduce clutter and are good decor items.
You can use baskets to store and put away the shoes that are a bit worn and you would like to hide away or shoes you are not wearing often at that moment.
Bins.
Bins are a great option for storing away out-of-season shoes, like your winter boots in the summer. You can then tuck the bins at the top of your closet, beneath your bed, or wherever you see fit.
When you store away out-of-season shoes, you have more room in your closet for the shoes that are in season at that time.
For instance, you don’t need to have your summer sandals taking up space in your closet during the winter when you will not be reaching for them. You can instead place them in bins and then tuck them away under your bed or anywhere else you see fit.
This would free up so much space to organize your in-season shoes nicely in your closet.
Repurpose Bookshelves.

If you have extra space in your room, you can place a bookshelf to accommodate some of your shoes.
You can display them or use baskets and shelf organizers to maximize each shelf space.
You can also opt for shelves specifically made for shoes, such as the ones you find in Ikea instead.
Wall shelves (floating shelves).
If you have a bare wall in your room or other parts of your house that you don’t mind using for shoes, consider installing floating shelves from the top to the bottom of the wall.
This would provide you with shoe storage almost equivalent to a walk-in closet.
It could also improve the interior of a space by adding a little sophistication to it. With this, you wouldn’t have to do too much for decor.
Use an ottoman.

An ottoman is an excellent hideaway spot for your shoes. It is a multifunctional piece of furniture that can serve as a sitting area, a piece of décor, and storage for your shoes at the same time.
It is a good place to hideaway some shoes inside your furniture.
Repurpose an old cupboard.
A repurposed cupboard could be used for just about anything, and shoes are no exception. Look around your house, and you probably could find one.
And if you can’t find one in your house, you can check the thrift stores or flea markets close to you. You can spray paint it to blend with the other furniture you have.
A good spot to place them would be in hallways or entryways in your house or apartment.
Entryway bench.

If you already have a bench in your entryway, consider swapping it for one with shoe storage underneath.
You can store casual shoes that you wear very often, like shoes you use for running errands and shoes belonging to your guest when they visit. This would also keep your entryway clean and shoe-clutter free.
Tension rods.
For a more organized shoe arrangement, consider placing tension rods at the bottom of your closet and placing your shoes on them.
Usually, you install two rods for each level of shoes.
Place the two rods at the same level for flat-heeled shoes, and for your heels, place the rod behind higher.
This is also a great way to maximize the space you have at the bottom of your closet.
Other things to consider when creating storage for your shoes
Proper storage: Before deciding where to store your shoes, you need to figure out the proper storage technique for the different shoes you have without damaging them. Some shoes are more delicate and need to be treated with care.
Clean your shoes properly before storage: This is especially important for the shoes you will be storing away. Make sure you clean them properly, so they don’t stink or so the dirt doesn’t permanently stain your shoes.
Dry them properly: After cleaning your shoes, it is important that you dry them thoroughly. Storing away moist shoes can make molds grow on them, which will destroy your shoes and also cause a stink. I recommend keeping the bins open and not coving them with their lids to give your shoes room to air.
