Having a room with a bad odor can ruin your ability to relax properly. Here’s how to fix that and get rid of that bad room odor.
The bedroom is one of the most important spaces in your house.
It is the place you retire to after a long day.
Your activities in your bedroom are most likely not limited to just resting/ sleeping.
For instance, you might have your work area in your bedroom.
Whatever functions your room serves, the bottom line is that you spend a huge chunk of your time there daily, and as such, you need to make it as comfortable as possible.
A lot of things go into making a room pleasant, from a nice comfy bed to other pieces of furniture that pull everything together to create your nice little space for sleep and relaxation.
But, even in the most beautifully decorated room, a stink or odor could ruin your ability to enjoy your beautiful space.
If you can’t seem to get rid of that musty smell in your room, or you are looking for a few tips to help keep your room smelling nice and airy, you are in the right place.
Below are ways to make your room smell fresh all the time so you can genuinely enjoy the space you put much effort into creating.
1. Air your room every morning
You do not necessarily have to limit airing your room to mornings, but I suggest doing that because it’s easier to remember and make a habit of.
It is also reasonable to let out the stale air in your room all through the night and let in the fresh morning breeze, especially if you close your windows at night.
I know airing a space is a basic thing to do, but I’m emphasizing this because we sometimes are caught in very busy schedules, which makes it easy to forget or put it off.
So, open the windows when you wake up and before going about your day; that way, your room will be nicely aerated when you return, and you can relax better.
2. Keep shoes outside
If you take your shoes straight into your room as soon as you take them off, you are setting your space up for a stink.
You see, your feet sweat for however long you are wearing your shoes, even if you don’t notice it.
Covered or closed shoes like trainers and boots do not allow much air passage when you are wearing them, so the moisture is trapped in your shoes as long as you have them on, and taking those shoes straight into your room without airing them could make your room stink.
I’m not condemning storing your shoes in your room.
A lot of us do.
Just make sure they are properly aired.
If you have limited space, such as a dorm room for a college student, you will have to make good use of what space you have available, and that might mean airing your shoes outside your room is not reasonable.
In that case, I’ll suggest keeping the shoes as close to a window as possible.
What is most important is that your shoes are aired as soon as you take them off before placing them in your closet or shoe storage.
3. Clean your room often
None of the tips here would be beneficial without the basics of just cleaning your room.
A simple hoovering or sweeping and mopping might be all your room needs to smell clean and fresh again.
If you want to get rid of a bad room odor, you have to make it a habit to clean it regularly
4. Avoid drying clothes in your room
Drying clothes in your room will leave your room damp, and a damp room will send the cozy feel of your room out the window.
Drying your clothes in your room or any indoor space, in the long run, does more harm than make your room smell bad.
The damp clothes bring a lot of humidity to a space, making it conducive for microorganisms like molds to grow.
For the comfort of your room and your health, it is better to air dry your clothes outdoors if you’re not using a dryer, and if the weather is not conducive, like when it is snowing or raining, you should have a designated space for drying.
5. Avoid large piles of dirty clothes
Dirty clothes don’t smell fresh, and having a bunch of them just lying around would make your room smell.
Get yourself a suitable laundry hamper or basket to store dirty clothes in, and make an effort to do your laundry as often as you can.
6. Limit how often you eat in your room
If you grew up like me, your Mom most likely did not allow you to eat in your room, but the moment you are an adult and can enjoy a little bit of freedom, some of these bad habits become very easy to pick up.
When you eat in your room, your room will smell like food for a while, and most times, that’s not a pleasant smell for a room (unless you don’t mind the smell of onions as a room fragrance).
In addition, you could leave behind little crumbs and particles of food that you miss, and that alone would be sending an invitation to different kinds of bugs to come to infest your place.
7. Take the bin out or change it often
If you keep a bin in your room, you should reconsider how important it is to have it there and what goes in it.
How often you change it out is also important.
Bins are an easy culprit for stink.
If you can find a better place for your bin other than your room, you should move it there.
8. Get rid of clutter
Clutter is an enemy that keeps creeping up on you if you are not vigilant.
By vigilant, I mean staying on top of things and cleaning stuff out or putting things back in their place as soon as possible.
When you have clutter just lying around, they tend to hide the dirt that you might not have access to while cleaning.
If you have clutter because you don’t have enough space, it might be time to clean your room out, downsize and get rid of items that are not of much use to you anymore.
9. Use indoor plants
Plants are not just great for decorating and bringing a little bit of nature into your space. They are great for keeping your room fresh and aerated all the time.
Plants take in CO2 and release oxygen during photosynthesis; hence they are essential elements of our environment.
They purify the air in a space by lowering the CO2 levels and releasing oxygen.
Plants also increase the humidity and lower the temperature of a space, giving your room a more tranquil and cozier feel.
10. Finish off with a fragrance
Last but definitely not least on this list of how to get rid of a bad room odor is to finish off with fragrance.
A nice, sainted candle or room fragrance could be the icing on the cake in making your room smell amazing.
Have fun shopping and finding the scents that suit your taste.
